Sunscreen is as synonymous with summer as barbecues, baseball, and beach trips. But what happens if the product meant to protect you does the opposite? According to a recent CBS News article, that was the case with Banana Boat’s Hair and Scalp sunscreen. Its maker, Edgewell Personal Care Company, has issued a voluntary recall after tests detected trace levels of benzene, a carcinogen linked to cancers. Specifically, the benzene came from the propellant inside the spray can, not the actual product.
The recall includes three batches 6 oz Banana Boat Hair and Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 with three different expiration dates. Though no adverse reactions related to the product have been reported, a press release from the company advises those in possession of the affected lots to throw them out.
