Claiming 647,000 lives a year, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. This means that roughly 25% of the deaths in America are due to heart disease. A recent CNN Health article discussed a new approach to preventing heart disease that could cut heart attacks and strokes by as much as 40%. The solution involves an inexpensive polypill paired with an aspirin.
Haven’t heard of a polypill? That’s because they’re more of a European thing; polypills are seldom marketed or used in the United States. A polypill is a combination of three different blood pressure medications and a cholesterol-lowering statin, all of which are generics. The research was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
