Sonoco Recycling names P&G's IAMS(R) Russellville facility a Gold Sustainability Star Award winner

Sonoco Recycling, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sonoco (NYSE:SON) and one of the largest packaging recyclers in North America, today announced that P&G's IAMS Russellville, Ark., facility has received a gold-tier Sonoco Sustainability Star Award for achieving zero waste to landfill.

Rodger Fuller, president, Sonoco Recycling, said, "Moving landfill waste from 5 percent to zero is often the most difficult for our clients. The Russellville team was able to overcome this hurdle and successfully achieve zero-waste-to-landfill (ZWTL) status. We're pleased to present them with this much-deserved sustainability star award."

The facility diverts materials from landfill using a creative mix of composting, recycling and incineration. Over 85 percent of the plant's waste is composted, 11 percent is recycled and the remainder is used for waste to energy. To make it easier to transport waste to incineration facilities, P&G removed the plant's front load (FEL) container and replaced it with Gaylord boxes.

Created to recognize customer and Sonoco facilities for achieving significant milestones in landfill diversion and waste stream reduction, the Sustainability Star Award program is composed of three tiers:

  • Gold Star Awards, which recognize facilities that have achieved at least 99 percent landfill diversion;

  • Silver Star Recognition, which is awarded to facilities achieving 95 percent landfill diversion; and

  • Bronze Awards, recognizing facilities and programs that have made significant waste reduction achievements.
