Day one at INTERPHEX 2012 unveils vibrant exhibit hall, new conference approach, remainder of event promises more benefits

The month of May has opened energetically with INTERPHEX 2012, which has kicked off its three-day May 1-3 run at New York's Javits Center.

The event is the world's largest forum for pharma/biopharma manufacturers and opened this year with a re-engineered conference program that focuses on drug-to-market delivery processes, providing an even stronger complement to INTERPHEX's highly-recognized exhibit platform. The educational tracks include Regulatory QA/QC, Product Development, Facility & Process Design, Manufacturing & Packaging, and Supply Chain, a strategic emphasis that extends to the technical workshops, keynote presentations, technology floor tours, and special Thursday presentations open to all badge holders.

The well-attended keynote presentations included What the New Bio/Pharma Business Model Means for CMOs and CROs by Jim Miller, President, PharmSource Information Services and Control, Capability and Capacity: Elements Assuring a Reliable Drug Supply by Jeffery C. Baker, Ph.D., Deputy Director, Office of Biotechnology Products, CDER, FDA.

Thousands of exhibit hall and conference attendees visited the show floor to meet exhibitors who have applied these product delivery disciplines. More than 650 suppliers and 1,000 product lines are in the floor zones of Facilities, Manufacturing & Packaging, Automation Systems & Controls and Sourcing & Services. More than 90 new products and services are being launched at the show, and the energy level is high.

"DJA is presenting our newest brand - Visionspect -- at INTERPHEX this year, plus the latest advances in the Viswill Tablet and Capsule Visual Inspection technologies," said Rusty Nelson, General Manager of DJA Pharma. "Our Visionspect division is launching the industry's first contract visual inspection system, offering automated visual inspection with no capital outlay, and INTERPHEX is the most cost-effective way to present our brands face-to-face with the entire Pharma market."

"Our company is a leading supplier of processing, packaging and assembly machinery," said Fabio Trippodo, President of MG America. "We just formed a strategic partnership with Romaco as the exclusive supplier for several of the company's machinery brands in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. This exciting news came at the right time - because INTERPHEX is the biggest and best event in the country to turn a solid new partnership into solid new business opportunities."

Day two, Wednesday, May 2, will see a return of the popular Integrated Project Services (IPS)-led series of exhibit technology floor tours. This year's topics are advanced aseptic, biologics and oral solid dosage form manufacturing, which includes presentations on The Role of CMOs in Supporting Global Vaccine Production Needs: A Case Study on Brazil Fill Finish; Next Gen Biomanufacturing: Developing the Manufacturing Facility of the Future; and Should it be Scale-Up or Scale Out...Bigger is not Always Better or Faster. The number of tours has been expanded and all are booked to capacity.

The second day will also feature the keynote address on Creating Innovative Cold Chain Solutions for Your Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Products by Richard Smith, Director Life Sciences & Specialty Services at FedEx, as well as Technical Workshops led by EMP Millipore, GE Healthcare, STERIS and Thermo Fisher Scientific.

This year also marks special programming extended to Day Three on Thursday, May 3, with presentations open to all badge holders:

• Practical Applications of Statistical Methods Under 2011 FDA Process Validation Guidance: Abe Germansderfer, Associate Director, Gilead Sciences, Inc.
• Making it in Massachusetts - A Small Company's Road to the CMO Market: Glenn Alto, President and CEO, Pharmalucence, Inc. and Edward J. Connolly, Chief Operating Officer, Pharmalucence, Inc.
• Development of Novel CR Formulation Mitigating Dose Dumping & Misuse: Shams Rustom, M.Pharm, RPh., Senior Director, Product Development & Manufacturing, Labopharm.

Additional Events

Running throughout the show is a display of the five Category Winners and one Special Recognition award winner in the eighth annual Facility of the Year Awards (FOYA) program. This is ISPE's 15th year as the major sponsor of INTERPHEX, and both organizations and Pharmaceutical Processing magazine are showcasing the winning projects. Representatives from each are present, in the only joint appearance they will make apart from the ISPE Annual Meeting in November 2012, when one category winner will be named Overall Winner.

Other event benefits include the Outsourcing One-on-One Meetings, sponsored by Contract Pharma, which matches attendees with sourcing needs together with contract manufacturers and other service providers in a staffed and private meeting center. There is also a VIP Lounge and ISPE members have access to the ISPE Member Lounge.
