FDA Approves Surgical Augmented Reality

Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality system projects 2D, 3D, and 4D images onto a patient’s body to help physicians plan surgery.

A recent HealthImaging article noted the FDA’s approval of Microsoft’s augmented reality system for use in pre-operative surgical planning. OpenSight uses a Microsoft HoloLens headset to allow physicians to view 3D images in augmented reality as well as the actual patient and their real-world surroundings. Use of the technology should decrease operation duration and improve surgical planning.
