To date, Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has only been tested on adults, but according to a recent KOAT Action News article, that’s about to change. A team of scientists at the University of New Mexico Hospital are preparing to test the Moderna vaccine on children aged 6 months to 12 years. The open-label placebo-controlled study will test safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of two doses administered 4 weeks apart. The subjects will be monitored for 12 months, after the second shot.
Though the majority of children infected with COVID-19 seem to have mild or no symptoms at all, there are still reasons for kids to get vaccinated. If no one under the age of 18 received the vaccine, it would be impossible to achieve herd immunity. It also would give teachers peace of mind knowing schools are opening with a vaccinated student body.
