Smartphones Can Now Tell When You’re Drunk

Smartphones can be used as a tool to prevent drunk driving.

A recent Medgadget article discussed a new smartphone feature that could save your life. According to a  new study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, smartphones can use their accelerometer to monitor walking movements and determine if a person is intoxicated, and prevent them from acting irresponsibly.

Lead researcher Brian Suffoletto, an MD who lost a friend to drunk driving said, “In 5 years, I would like to imagine a world in which if people go out drinking with friends and drink at risky levels, they get an alert from the first sign of impairment and are sent strategies to help them stop drinking and protect them from high-risk events like driving, interpersonal violence and unprotected sexual encounters.”
