Schreiner MediPharm, a developer and manufacturer of functional labels for the healthcare industry, is introducing a multifunctional label for pens and autoinjectors combining analog and digital security features with additional benefits. The new label, which addresses challenges that pharmaceutical manufacturers face amid a booming GLP-1 market, will be showcased at PACK EXPO Booth W-23098, October 18-21.
In addition, Schreiner MediPharm will be displaying its innovative Cap-Lock label solutions for enhanced product security. Available for syringes and vials, Cap-Lock provides irreversible analog and digital first opening indication while ensuring integrity from initial production through final use. Thanks to label-integrated RFID functionality, it enables a wide range of digital applications for automated medication management, and improves efficiency and safety along the supply chain.
Individual syringes or vials can be tracked at unit level, with previously opened containers automatically recognized. In the case of syringes, Cap-Lock even allows for secure, blister-free packaging: combined with the SCHOTT TOPPAC® infuse syringe featuring a specialty cap, Schreiner MediPharm’s Cap-Lock Label can transfer a conventional blister’s protective properties to the primary container. This demonstrates how sustainable packaging design can combine waste and cost reduction with user convenience and patient safety.
Multifunctional Security for GLP-1 Products, Brands and Patients
The high demand for GLP-1 drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes and obesity makes them an increasingly attractive target for counterfeiting attempts. At the same time, the requirements concerning the safe and user-friendly design of pens and autoinjectors keep growing. Schreiner MediPharm’s new multifunctional label has been developed to satisfy these requirements, supporting pharmaceutical manufacturers in strengthening product and patient safety throughout the supply chain.
The specialty label from Schreiner MediPharm integrates various analog and digital security features for reliable authentication. Overt security features – such as ShiftSecure, which offers a positive-negative effect depending on the viewing angle – can be verified directly by visual inspection. These are complemented by semi-covert features such as microtext and InfraredSecure, as well as digital functions like covert, smartphone-readable printed codes, or integrated NFC technology. The result is multi-level authentication for various stakeholders along the supply chain, from the pharmaceutical manufacturer to the patient. In addition, the digital features can be used for geo-tracking to improve detection and tracking of counterfeiting and gray market activities.

Clearly Detectable Tampering
A key element of the solution is its irreversible first-opening indication feature. Because the label covers part of the pen cap, any opening attempt becomes permanently visible. Optionally, first-opening evidence can also be delivered digitally via NFC plus a smartphone. At the same time, the design prevents undetected recapping and illegal reuse of the label. The special label construction permanently protects all product information against abrasion. If label removal is attempted, parts of the printed layer will remain so that the pen cannot be reused illegally.
Convenience, Brand Visibility and Efficient Integration
In addition to the security functions, Schreiner MediPharm’s label improves the devices’ user friendliness. An extended label area offers ample space for product information, larger font, and customized design, while the integration of an NFC chip affords additional opportunities for digital services and interactive user support. The functional label is tailored to each customer’s requirements and complements existing platform devices of pen and autoinjector manufacturers via additional functions.
Scalable production capacities at Schreiner MediPharm and the seamless integration of the labels into high-speed labeling processes support pharmaceutical manufacturers in assuring efficient and reliable supply, even in the event of growing demand.
