Insulated beverage wrap earns Gold

Winning a Gold Award for Technical Innovation was Cool2Go® wrap from DuPont (www.dupont.com/packaging). It is a 30- to 40-mil structure comprising polyester fiberfill material that’s heat-sealed between two layers of DuPont’s Melinex® polyester film.

Cool2Go serves as an insulating layer that keeps beverages cool by preventing the transfer of heat from warm hands, condensation, or the outside temperature.

Last summer, Labatt Breweries of Canada, Toronto, Ontario, became the first company to test Cool2Go, marketing 473-mL (16-oz) aluminum cans in the wrap. Supplied in rollstock form, the Cool2Go material was automatically applied to filled and seamed cans by Alliance Labeling (www.alliancelabeling.com). Then a shrink overwrap label from Multi-Color Corp. (www.multicolorcorp.com) was applied over the Cool2Go material. For this application, the printed overwrap label included Labatt’s Blue brand colors highlighted with silver metallic inks.

“Our research confirmed that one of the top complaints of beer drinkers is that their beer gets warm too fast,” said Bog Chant, Labatt’s director of corporate affairs last spring. “It’s just common sense for us to develop The Labatt Blue Cold One, a special can that helps keep beer colder longer.”

The cans were sold in Ontario and Quebec while supplies lasted last summer, for $14.95 for a six-pack, as well as at select bars and restaurants. At press time, information about the test’s success was unavailable, although DuPont reports it was well received. DuPont says that in addition to Labatt’s test, Cool2Go has since been introduced by Skol for Skol Geladona beers in Brazil. —Jim Butschli
