According to a recent Boston Globe article, two vaccine officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will leave the agency this fall. The two men are Marion Gruber, Ph.D., Director of FDA Office of Vaccines Research and Review, and Deputy Director Phillip Krause, M.D. Both Gruber and Kraus have been with the FDA for decades, and were key in the agency’s expedited authorization of COVID-19 vaccines amid the pandemic.
Gruber is slated to retire at the end of October, and Krause will depart the following month. The surprise development comes at a crucial time for the FDA’s vaccine review team as it weighs whether to authorize a third Pfizer shot for most Americans, and the user of COVID-19 vaccines in children.
