Vaccination progress seems to have slowed, but part of the reason is that a significant portion of the population isn’t eligible: kids. According to a recent NBC News article, the American Academy of Pediatrics is pressing the FDA to approve a vaccine for children under the age of 12. Pediatric cases of Covid-19 have surged as the highly-contagious delta variant gains steam. With schools reopening for fall semesters soon, the matter is becoming more urgent.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, a non-profit professional organization consisting of more than 67,000 primary care pediatricians. penned a letter to Janet Woodcock, Action Commissioner of the FDA. In it, they urge the agency to “continue working aggressively toward authorizing safe and effective COVID-19 vaccinations for children under age 12 as soon as possible.” As of this writing, only the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine has been authorized for kids and teens, ages 12-17.
