New Blood Test Detects Stress Levels

The test allows for a continuous readout of cortisol levels for real-time analysis of the patient’s stress.

There’s no doubt the pandemic raised stress levels all over the world. The silver lining is that it destigmatized addressing stress and anxiety with the help of mental health professionals. But how do we measure stress? According to a recent Medgadget article, researchers at Rutgers University created a microchip that can measure stress hormone levels in the blood in real time.

The benefit is that it will help patients monitor the natural changes in cortisol levels, without having to send blood samples to the lab. The accuracy of the microchip is comparable in accuracy to the sensitivity of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) lab tests.
