Apple Supplier Announces Blood Sugar Testing Wristband

Rockley Photonics developed a non-invasive spectrometer-on-a-chip platform that can test multiple biomarkers.

Testing blood sugar levels is a necessary evil for diabetics because it typically consists of drawing blood. Well, according to a recent 9to5Mac article, an Apple supplier has a new product intended to improve testing methods with a noninvasive option. Rockley Photonics formally announced that it has a solution to the issue, and the company is moving forward with testing. The first iteration of the sensor will be part of a standalone wristband, but the company is hoping their tech will make its way over to Apple Watch models.

The device is referred to as the “clinic-on-the-wrist” digital health sensor system. The built-in sensor integrates hardware and application firmware to enable the wearable to monitor core body temperature, blood pressure, body hydration, alcohol, lactate, and glucose trends. Its noninvasive subdermal probe analyzes blood, interstitial fluids, and layers of the skin. Rockley says its first generation versions will be available for commercial use early next year.
