As the summer weather spreads across the US, the FDA has an important message regarding sun protection: don’t use sunscreen supplements. An NBC News article noted remarks from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottleib related to the pills, “There’s no pill or capsule that can replace your sunscreen.”
Sunscreen supplements companies claim that their products can strengthen the skin’s defenses against ultraviolet radiation, but there is no evidence to support the claims. Gottleib notes that the companies “are putting people’s health at risk by giving consumers a false sense of security that a dietary supplement could prevent sunburn, reduce early skin aging caused by sun, or protect from the risks of cancer.”
Companies called out by the FDA include Advanced Skin Brightening Formula,Sunsafe Rx,SolaricareandSunergetic.
