At-Home 3D Printed Device Provides Quick Blood Disorder Diagnosis

With a prick of the finger and a smartphone, the biomedical device can quickly detect anemia.

Researchers at Kansas State University have developed a 3D printed diagnostic device that can rapidly detect anemia at the point-of-care, including in a patient's home.

The device consists of 3D printed clear plastic slides containing microfluidics that attach to a smartphone. The user adds a drop of their blood to a slide, which is used for a color scale-based test.

In a university press release, Kim Plevniak, master's student in biological and agricultural engineering at the Kansas State University Olathe campus, explained that test results are produced in less than 60 seconds and can be read using a smartphone.

Researchers hope the device can also help detect anemia in remote locations.
