Health Canada proposes new labeling for acetaminophen

Concerns over liver damage have prompted the new measure.

Health Canada is thinking of changing the labeling on acetaminophen, because of liver concerns.

According to The Canadian Press, acetaminophen is the leading cause of liver injuries in Canada, and, as a result, the department is reviewing the maximum number of the maximum recommended daily dose of the drug.

"We're looking both at what the ... maximum unit dose should be for non-prescription products and prescription products as well as what should be prescription and non-prescription," Dr. Supriya Sharma, a Health Canada official, told the news outlet.

Health Canada is also considering requiring all liquid medications for children that contain acetaminophen be "sold with an accurate dosing device to minimize the risk of overdose," according to the report.

An estimated 4,000 hospitalizations a year are attributed to acetaminophen overdoses, according to the article.
