Schreiner MediPharm, a Germany-based global provider of specialty pharmaceutical labeling solutions for over 60 years, will demonstrate a variety of labeling solutions at Booth #606 of the Parenteral Drug Association’s Pre-filled Syringes & Injection Devices Conference, October 6-7 in Huntington Beach, CA. Specialty products that Schreiner will be showcasing include a multi-functional, customizable label for injection devices, as well as a label-integrated safety device designed to prevent needle-stick injuries.

Among other highlights from Schreiner MediPharm will be a new multi-functional sample label for pens and autoinjectors, which will be displayed with the following features:

  • First-opening indication: The label enclosing the cap is perforated, with a tear strip that must be removed before the cap can be opened or the perforation is destroyed when opening the cap.

  • Holograph: An additional security feature serving as anti-counterfeiting protection.

  • Temperature indicator: A reversible color shift effect shows when a defined medication temperature has been reached.

  • Anti-slip varnish: A special varnish improves the grip on the label surface, allowing patients to use the pen more confidently and safely.

  • NFC chip: An integrated near-field communication chip allows for interactive options such as electronic user info, patient compliance tracking and product authentication.

  • QR code: Leads users to a webpage with additional product information.

At the conference, Schreiner MediPharm also will be showcasing Needle-Trap, a label designed to protect healthcare providers from accidental needlestick injuries from disposable syringes.

Schreiner MediPharm’s Needle-Trap system, which meets the upgraded safety mandates of the new EU Council Directive and also has been awarded FDA 510(k) clearance for marketing in the U.S., features a safety mechanism integrated as a component of the self-adhesive syringe label. This compact, economical design allows the blood-contaminated needle to be simply and safely secured following its use, and can be easily operated by healthcare personnel in a controlled, single-handed fashion. After the needle has locked into the plastic trap – an action clearly perceptible by an audible and visible signal – it is irreversibly protected. Needle-Trap is currently used on millions of syringes produced by leading, multi-national pharmaceutical companies.

Needle-Trap can be easily integrated into conventional packaging and labeling systems, since it is processed and dispensed like a label. Furthermore, it is adaptable to all standard syringe dimensions. Needle-Trap requires no additional storage space and is housed in common secondary packaging, adding to its cost-effectiveness and simplicity of integration. To reduce the risk of medication errors, optional detachable documentation labels also are available.

"When partnering with customers in the parenteral market, the safety of patients and healthcare providers is a vital component of our overall labeling solutions – as are, of course, product security and efficacy,” said Gene Dul, President of Schreiner MediPharm U.S. “The labeling solutions we are highlighting at the Pre-filled Syringes & Injection Devices Conference address these needs.”
