Royal Victoria Hospital Leads Industry with Canada's First RIVA System

Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) in Barrie, Ontario is the first Canadian hospital to order a RIVA System (Robotic IV Automation System) - a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags from Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems).

The RIVA System will be used in RVH's new Chemo Centre; under construction as part of the hospital's $400 million redevelopment slated to open in September 2011.

“The strategic investment and introduction of the RIVA System into Canadian hospitals and pharmacies is a tremendous landmark in the adaptation of robotic innovation,” acknowledges Niels Erik Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of IH Systems. “RVH's commitment to innovative medical practices is a true testament to the organization and its staff,” he concludes.

In addition to supporting USP 797 compliance, a set of strict medical compliances not mandatory for Canadian hospitals but one RVH continually seeks to achieve, the RIVA System will allow the hospital to compound ready-to-use sterile doses that are currently manually compounded. For Ben Szuuts, Sales Manager for Manrex Limited, the organization responsible for the sale of the RIVA System, collaborating with RVH on this milestone project has reinforced the important role robotic automation plays in the evolution of healthcare. “The signing of this agreement with RVH is another step in the right direction for Canadian Healthcare,” says Szuuts. “We are very excited to be working with RVH. Their commitment to patient and staff safety solidifies their position as leaders in Canadian Healthcare.”
