Press release tips; next newsletter August 3

How do you effectively communicate a new product, service, or packaging application for publication? It's a question we receive with some frequency here at Healthcare Packaging and Packaging World magazines. Click on this story's headline to read some suggestions. One additional note: Healthcare Packaging will resume its four-times-per-month electronic newsletter beginning Friday, Aug. 3.

• Whether your company has just invested in a new cartoning machine or is introducing a new tray sealer, make sure the subject of your release is crystal clear. Too often we receive releases that are chock full of capabilities and promotional data that don't effectively communicate the product or service.

• If you're sending us an application story focusing on a manufacturer's use of packaging equipment or materials, make sure the pharmaceutical or medical device manufacturer's name and location, contact name, phone, and e-mail address are provided. Many end-user firms sign confidentiality agreements with packaging suppliers, making it difficult to publish these success stories. Yet, many end-user firms are willing to discuss a specific machine rather than revealing their entire packaging line. They may also talk about topical issues, such as validation, counterfeiting, etc., as a platform to express their viewpoints without revealing proprietary details. Manufacturers can benefit from a story that shows their packaging savvy and identifies them as a leader—without revealing some details the company deems proprietary.

• For new product announcements, describe specific benefits of the new machine, material, or service, why it's different, and how it will benefit end-user companies. Any insight into how it helps improve on a previous method is also beneficial.

• Tell us what specific application the product is designed to benefit, be it gamma irradiation, temperature-sensitive transportation, cleanroom manufacturing, machine validation, etc.

• Provide high-resolution color photograph(s) of the machine, material, or application.

• Provide the appropriate contact name(s), phone, and e-mail addresses for further information about the subject(s) of the press release. Send them to [email protected].
