A slice of a $1 trillion pie, anyone?

America continues to be a land of opportunity. Take, for example, a story on marketing to baby boomers in the March 14 issue of U.S. News & World Report. It says, "75 million baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1964...have an estimated $1 trillion in disposable income annually." I don't know about you, but it takes me years to earn that kind of money after Uncle Sam takes his share. Seriously, though, the article goes on to say, "The one marketing segment that hasn't overlooked the boomer population is the antiaging market. From pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals to cosmetic peels and plastic surgery, the race is on to tap the wallets of a generation that wants to be forever young...The pharmaceutical industry has hundreds of antiaging drugs in its research pipeline."

Those products will require containers and materials such as jars, bottles, vials, closures, labels, tamper-evident bands, films, cartons, boxes, and so on. Those materials will have to be filled with product, capped, labeled, coded, cartoned, case-packed, palletized, and stretch-wrapped. That presents opportunities throughout the packaging supply chain. Getting those products to baby boomers will require personnel in research and development, marketing, engineering, purchasing, shipping and receiving, and the list goes on. Dig in and seize the day!
