A recent Xconomy article gave insight into Johnson & Johnson’s newest effort to make Houston a global hub for healthcare innovation. At the helm of the new CDI @ TMC (as they’re calling it) is Billy Cohn, a cardiac surgeon and serial entrepreneur in the medical device space. Previously the director of the Texas Heart Institute, Cohn will leverage the global multinational resources of J&J to take medical device innovation from concept to commercialization.

The center will house an incubator/accelerator with an engineering studio and maker space set to open in Q3 of 2017. CDI @ TMC will also collaborate with and have direct access to preclinical facilities at Baylor, Houston Methodist Hospital, and THI to test novel devices for organ systems diseases. The J&J team will determine the best ways to bring new device technologies into clinical practice with access to the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation, and Education, a virtual hospital and hands-on clinical training facility.
