Magnetic Beads Make Bionic Limbs More Precise

The new strategy aims to improve how amputees and patients with mobility issues interact with the world.

Prosthetic limbs are far from perfect, but seemingly getting better by the day with new thanks to technological advances. According to a recent Medgadget article, the latest prosthetic concept, developed by engineers at MIT, includes implanting magnetic beads and a series of sensors that monitor their movement.

When implanted in a residual limb, the paired beads move relative to each other and generate information on muscle movement. The sensors then relay this information to a prosthetic to control its movements more precisely than current electromyography systems. A video with more information can be seen here
