Did the FDA Recall All COVID-19 PCR Tests?

A screenshot of an FDA recall has social media users wondering if the PCR tests they took are valid.

Social media users are confused by a screenshot circulating that suggests all PCR tests authorized by the FDA have been recalled. The strongly worded posts claim “THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST HORRIFIC CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY SINCE THE DAWN OF MANKIND.”

According to a Reuters Fact Check, that’s not the case at all. In fact, the recall only applies to one company’s PCR test, the Innova SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Qualitative Test. The test in question claims to produce a result faster than a PCR test that must be analyzed in a laboratory, but was recalled on June 6th.

Apparently the Innova test comes with “a risk of false results,” and does not meet performance standards set by the FDA. The flaw could lead to delayed diagnoses or improper treatment of SARS-CoV-2, which could cause patient harm or even death. The FDA’s full announcement can be seen here. Yet another reminder not to get your news or medical guidance from social media.
