JnJ Has World’s First Drug-Releasing Contact Lens

Johnson & Johnson has combined an antihistamine with daily contact lenses to ease eye allergies.

A recent Johnson & Johnson press release noted the approval of their drug-releasing combination contact lens. The product, ACUVUE Theravision with Ketotifen, is the world’s first and only combination of a disposable contact lens with the antihistamine ketotifen. The medicinal additive is intended to relieve itchy inflamed eyes from allergies.

This addresses the issue of contact wearers experiencing frustration when their eye allergies interfere with wearing lenses, a problem that apparently affects 80% of contact wearers. The proprietary lenses were approved from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on March 23rd.
