Here at GS1 Connect 2013 at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort, the annual conference begins with activities designed to get more than 1,000 attendees up to speed. GS1 is an organization with a wealth of different resources to offer different industries. Even before the real GS1 Connect learning begins on Wednesday, with attendees breaking out into their own tracks, there are sessions on Tuesday, June 11 to educate newcomers on standards, acronyms, etc. For those in the Healthcare track, that means learning about GLN, GTIN, GDSN, and SSCC:

GS1 Global Location Numbers for location identification

GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers for product identification

GS1 Global Data Synchronization Network for electronic data sharing

GS1 Serial Shipping Container Code for identifying and tracking logistics units.

There’s also time to investigate the Exhibit Hall and plan some one-on-one Ask the Experts time. And of course, networking can be the most valuable part of the experience, with a chance to speak one-on-one with current and potential trading partners, and learn their language.

Tomorrow the Healthcare Track begins in earnest with a 9 a.m. session on the “State of the Healthcare Industry” from Siobhan O’Bara of GS1.

Somewhere in downtown San Antonio, basketball fans are braving the 90’s heat to see…the Heat—the Miami Heat team is in town to play the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Assn. Finals. But up here in the Hill Country at the Marriott, it’s all about GS1 Standards and the global language of business.
