Dietary supplements recalled over toxic ingredient

Sample analysis by the FDA showed these products contain an undeclared drug.

Novacare is voluntarily recalling all lots of 13 dietary supplements, after the FDA found them to have the undeclared drug ingredient salicylic acid, making these unapproved new drugs, according to the agency.

These products are marketed as dietary supplements aiding in weight loss, produced in capsule form, and were sold in bottles.

The FDA explained in a press release that salicylic acid is acutely toxic, not recommended for oral use and is harmful if swallowed. Reactions range from nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal irritation, loss of hearing, and sweating to severe reactions of blurred vision, mental confusion, cerebral edema and cardiorespiratory arrest which could be life-threatening may occur.

No illnesses from these products have been reported to date.

They were distributed nationwide.
