Black women are more than 42% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women. Researchers at MIT believe it’s because of an algorithmic bias that favors white women. A recent Tech Crunch article discussed a new deep learning-based AI prediction model that can anticipate the development of breast cancer up to 5 years early, and it works equally well for black and white patients.

The tool was trained on mammogram data from over 60,000 patients from the Massachusetts General Hospital. The goal of the project is to eliminate the lethal outcomes of late cancer detection, but the technique could also improve detection of other diseases.
