Introducing the $1 Zika Virus Test

Results can be available in about two to three hours.

A group of researchers have created a rapid Zika virus test that costs less than $1 and can have results in about two to three hours, according to The New York Times.

The paper-based test works by changing the yellow dots purple when the Zika virus is present, according to the report.

According to the article, the test "requires preliminary heating to amplify a sample’s RNA, which can be done in most laboratories."

The test has been proven successful with monkey blood, but researchers are in talks with groups in South America about "testing it in the field," according to one of the researchers.
