Andes Candies does the twist

By October 1, Delavan, WI-based Andes Candies will begin shipping two seasonal "crystal twist packs," one containing a red silk rose and candy wrapped in red foil for Valentine's Day; the other a silk tulip with assorted color wraps for Easter.

The clear, one-piece twist pack is made from polyvinyl chloride sheet stock, then cut, scored and glued into its rectangular shape by a supplier in the Far East whom Andes prefers not to identify. By twisting the top and bottom sections of the PVC pack, the consumer can remove the flower from the top section and the 8 oz of candy from the bottom. The pack can be reclosed with a simple twist. "This is a seasonal gift pack, and we're looking at a couple of additional options for Christmas," says Andes' vice president of marketing, Tom Drummond. "We use a food-grade PVC material for its clarity, and because it has good moisture and oxygen barrier properties. It is also supple enough to withstand twisting and reclosing." Andes fills the candy into the pack automatically on modified equipment, then inserts the rose by hand. The twist pack measures 9 1/4" H x 2 1/4" W and D. It will be sold in supermarkets, drug stores, mass merchandisers and department store outlets at a suggested retail price of $3.97.
