The packaging for Nestlé’s fruit- and nut-based healthy snack bars is taking an eco-friendly turn. Nestlé is now packaging its YES! snack bars in new recyclable paper wrappers — the first time a confectionery bar has been packaged in paper using high-speed flow-wrapping equipment.
The packaging for the YES! snack bars is composed of paper from sustainable sources certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and The Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.
Up until now, packaging shelf-stable snack bars in flow wrappers could only be achieved using durable plastic films and multilayer laminates. Now that Nestlé has found a way to use its high-speed flow-wrapping technology to gently wrap the bars in recyclable paper, the company says this equipment innovation could unlock the potential for recyclable paper packaging to be widely used in the confectionery industry.
“Consumers are looking for more natural and sustainable options when they choose a snack, both in terms of ingredients and packaging,” says Patrice Bula, head of strategic business units, marketing and sales at Nestlé. “Our YES! bars are made with wholesome ingredients that celebrate and care for Nature’s diversity. We are now relaunching them carefully wrapped in paper, making the packaging easy to recycle and avoiding plastic waste.”
Switching to recycled paper flow wrappers is part of Nestlé’s bigger commitment to sustainability and a waste-free future. In January 2019, the company pledged to make 100 percent of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. For example, in March 2019, Nestle launched its new Nesquick All Natural powder that features responsibly sourced cocoa in a new recyclable paper pouch.
With the new paper wrapper and a wider range of flavors, YES! is available in Europe, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.
