Bottled water gets 100% compostable labels

In the Summer of 2008, Pure Pacific International, Inc., Glendale, CA, launched Aloha Pure Water and Aloha Deep Water in PET bottles with 8- and 9-color Earth-First®, corn-based, PLA (polyactic acid) full-body shrink-sleeve labels.

The recyclable PET bottles (1⁄2-liter, 1-liter, and 11⁄2-liter) are supplied by Pacific Allied of Hawaii (www.pacificalliedproducts.com). The labels are supplied by Gilbreth (www.gilbrethusa.com).

Designed by beyondform (www.beyondform.com), the high-clarity, biopolymer film labels are made from renewable, plant-based, 100% compostable material. They feature bright metallic inks, reverse printing, and unique window views. Unlike traditional pressure-sensitive labels that tend to leave adhesive residue on the containers, these full-body sleeve labels can be cleanly removed during the recycling process.

Aloha artesian water is filtered by natural rock hundreds of feet beneath the Hawaiian Islands and is marketed both domestically and internationally. Pure Pacific CEO Steve Sparks says, “This labeling approach gave us the opportunity to get into biodegradable packaging. We chose to work with Gilbreth because they are very familiar with PLA material and its benefits.”
