FDA Says Additional Cancer Types Linked to Breast Implants

The agency has found “clusters” of new types of cancer linked to the scar tissue that accumulates near breast implants.

Breast Implants

A recent FierceBiotech article discussed new kinds of cancer that are linked to breast implants, according to the FDA. Since 2011, the agency has been tracking breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (aka BIA-ALCL). Now, it has found varieties of cancer linked to the scar tissue that forms around the implants. This includes squamous cell carcinoma and a range of lymphomas. These were detected through the FDA’s “postmarket analyses of scientific literature, medical device reports, real-world safety data and collaborations with industry stakeholders.”

However, the cases are infrequent; less than 20 cases of squamous cell carcinoma and less than 30 cases of the lymphomas have been attributed to the scar tissue.
