A recent EurekAlert! article discussed a novel implant that could replace addictive pain medications. A team of researchers at Northwestern University developed a small, flexible implant that can alleviate pain on demand, without the use of drugs. Biocompatible and water-soluble, the device works by enveloping nerves and administering precise cooling that numbs the nerves, and blocks pain signals from the brain. Users control the device via an external pump that activates it and adjusts the intensity. When the device is no longer needed, it is absorbed naturally by the body, eliminating the need for an invasive procedure.
