FDA Issues Hand Sanitizer Warning

Hand sanitizer splashing into kids’ eyes is a “growing safety issue,” according to the agency.

According to a recent Fox 8 article, the FDA has issued a warning to users of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Although the Drug Facts label states that the product shouldn’t be used near the eyes, the U.S. Poison Control Center received more than 3,600 reports of eye irritation and damage in a three year period. The majority of instances have involved children under the age of 5 at home.

The FDA says that if alcohol accidentally splashes into the eye, it should be rinsed with water immediately. The agency also advises that users should rub hands with sanitizer until they’re completely dry to avoid issues. The FDA is not planning to make changes to the Drug Facts label.
