The majority of pharmaceutical development for COVID-19 has been aimed at vaccines. However, a recent Interesting Engineering article discussed a new pill that treats people once they’ve contracted the virus. The drug is called molnupiravir, and its five-day regimen successfully reduced hospitalizations and deaths linked to COVID-19 by half. If approved for emergency use, the drug, developed by Merck, will be the first oral treatment for the illness and could be a step toward eradicating the pandemic.
