According to a recent article from The Jerusalem Post, researchers at Ben-Gurion University have created a new kind of artificial nose. The device is capable of differentiating between types of bacteria, viruses, and poisonous gases by identifying their “smell print.”
The team behind the nose is also training the device to detect gas molecules, both individually and in a mixture, with machine learning. Practical uses in the future could include detecting bacterial infections in ah hour, rather than 24 hours like the tests that are currently available, and warning of bacteria in food products.
