A recent Medgadget article discussed the latest in brain-computer news. A company called Neurolutions just received the FDA’s de novo authorization on their stroke rehab system. The device is called IpsiHand, and it is the first brain-computer interface technology intended to help patients regain control of hand functions.
IpsiHand employs the uninjured portion of the brain to trigger the opening and closing of a robotic shell that encapsulates the affected arm. An EEG headset reads brain waves and interprets them into signals that are sent to the exoskeleton, which controls the damaged hand. It’s intended for patients over 18 years of age who need to re-educate their muscles to increase their range of motion.
