New Sweat Sensor Warns of Deadly COVID-Related Cytokine Storms

A new wearable measures cytokine levels continuously to save lives with early warnings.

Severe COVID-19 cases have been linked to cytokine storms, which are characterized by a massive release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This leads to intense inflammation that can damage organs, and even lead to death. A recent Medgadget article discussed a new wearable aimed at warning wearers of impending cytokine levels, which could save lives. The device was developed by researchers at the University of Texas and EnLiSense, a Texas-based startup.

The device looks like a watch with a sensor strip on the back that collects passive sweat. When cytokines in the sweat bind, they change the electric current running through the device, which is measured and relayed wirelessly to a smartphone. The sensor measures seven different cytokines that are linked to storms. It has been tested on volunteers, but the team hopes to test it on COVID-19 patients soon.
