Scientists Develop Injectable Clotting Agent

The substance slowed internal bleeding in mice by 97%.

When someone is seriously bleeding, it’s a race against time. In a hospital, internal bleeding can be controlled, but in the field is another story. A recent EurekAlert! article discussed a new development that could help save trauma victims on the front lines. A team of researchers, funded by Harvard’s Blavatnik Biomedical Accelerator, has developed an injectable clotting agent that proved to reduce blood loss by 97% in mice models.

The agent is freeze-dried, and the consistency of cotton candy. It can be stored for several months at room temperature, and reconstituted in saline prior to injection. Next, the team will scale up production to validate the technology in larger animal models.
