A recent FiercePharma article contained bad news for Bayer, a company that is already experiencing a decline in consumer health sales. The company is recalling 1,048,256 cartons of Alka-Seltzer Original that was manufactured in Germany after confirming consumer complaints of “holes or cracks in blister packs.” The recall includes:

  • 1,067,520 12-count cartons
  • 24,672 24-count cartons
  • 56,064 36-count cartons

Although the voluntary recall took place a few months ago, the FDA posted it just last week. The issues stemmed from the actual blistering process during packaging, creating the potential for holes and cracks in the aluminum layer of the tablet blister material, which is not visible to the consumer. A release issued by Bayer noted, “ Bayer has assessed this defect as unlikely to pose a safety risk for consumers, therefore affected batches are not being recalled to patient level.”
