Popular Antibiotics Get Serious FDA Warning Label

In some cases, side effects from the drug may outweigh the benefits.

The FDA is now requiring the class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones to have a stronger warning about side effects causing serious issues, adding that in some cases, they outweigh the benefits.

Side effects can include damage to the central nervous system, mucles, joints, nerves and tendons, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Popular brand names of such drugs include Johnson & Johnson’s Levaquin and Bayer AG’s Cipro, generically called ciprofloxacin. This class of drugs have been on the market for about three years, the news outlet reported.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "Johnson & Johnson said it is studying the FDA’s statement and noted that Levaquin has been used for more than 20 years," while, Bayer said it is "aware of the FDA statement and will work closely with the FDA on the topic."
