ExxonMobil, one of the largest publicly traded international energy companies, uses technology and innovation to help meet the world's growing energy needs. The company recently launched its ExxonMobil Signature Polymers portfolio brand, which focuses on delivering service and partnerships within the polymers industry. ExxonMobil Signature Polymers unifies ExxonMobil's polyolefin products under a single brand, simplifying portfolio navigation and promoting enhanced collaboration across the value chain.

ExxonMobil Signature Polymers partnered with XL Recycling, a French PCR resin producer and part of the Reborn group, to develop high-performance stretch and shrink hood films containing post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. The collaboration responds to growing consumer demand and evolving regulations, including the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which requires 35% PCR in industrial packaging by 2030.

Together, they created thin films with 35% PCR content for stretch hood applications and 50% for shrink hood that deliver quality and capabilities on par with virgin films. By blending XL Recycling’s PCR resins with ExxonMobil’s Exceed Tough+, Exceed Stiff+, Exceed Flow, and Vistamaxx performance polymers in optimized three-layer structures, the team preserved the mechanical, optical, and processing properties customers expect.

Key results include:

  • PCR incorporation: Met PCR targets while maintaining performance comparable to virgin formulations.
  • Strength and durability:  Puncture and tear resistance to protect products during storage and transport.
  • Visual quality: Low haze for product visibility and brand presentation.
  • Load stability: High holding force and pallet security throughout distribution.
