IMPAK Corporation, a leading provider of advanced flexible packaging, thermoplastic sealers, and sorbent systems, announces PharmaLoc, their latest pouch version of child resistant packaging. PharmaLoc packaging comes in a variety of bag configurations and sizes, including bottom-gusseted pouches.

According to IMPAK Production Planner Jeff Low, the new PharmaLoc pouches represent a needed upgrade to existing child resistant offerings. “The PharmaLoc is near impossible for children to open, but for adults, the Presto slider makes for easy one-handed pinch-and-slide operation,” says Low. “The use of a Presto zipper makes our PharmaLoc the easiest to open CR packaging available. Most of these child resistant packages require both hands to navigate, but PharmaLoc bags can be opened even by those with arthritis.” Presto is the pioneer of the original Slide-Rite zipper closures.

PharmaLoc pouches utilizing this reusable closure meet or exceed ASTM D3475 standards and are tested to CFR 1700.20 protocols. According to a test conducted by Utah-based Child Related Research headed by CEO Michael Buie, the packages far exceed the safety standards required by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970. In one test, 100 senior adults were asked to open the package, and 98 opened the package. Out of 200 children asked to open the package, only three gained access, beating the minimum acceptance (80%) CPSC criteria by an impressive 37 children.

Because of the epidemic of childhood poisonings in the U.S., the most needed use of the PharmaLoc is to eliminate accidental ingestion of poisons in the home. However, some other uses of PharmaLoc packaging include:

  • As a portable medicine cabinet to secure travel medications.
  • For use by pharmacies to secure home medical supplies such as pen injectors, needles and diabetic supplies.
  • Compound pharmacies can use them for packaging steroids and other controlled substances.
  • They can also be used as exit bags by medical dispensaries.

IMPAK Senior Sales Consultant Jessica Morales adds: “There are many situations and circumstances which products, from poisons and swimming pool chemicals to prescription medicines, must be contained and protected from the young and curious.”

The clean, white medical grade packaging keeps youngsters away from package contents. The low cost, recloseable and reuseable packaging currently comes in two standard sizes with custom printing options. Various custom sizes in small runs can be made by IMPAK upon request. Recently, IMPAK produced 65 custom-sized child resistant packages measuring 42” x 10” tall for a private security firm.
