Avery Dennison’s ClearIntent™ Portfolio, which includes hundreds of facestocks, adhesives and other solutions that deliver sustainability-enhancing innovation, will be the emphasis of the company’s “Change the Future” zone at Labelexpo Americas 2018 booth #119.
The evolution of the ClearIntent™ portfolio is a direct result of Avery Dennison’s previously announced commitment to eight 2025 sustainability goals, one of which is that, by 2025, 70 percent of our products and solutions will conform to, or will enable end products to conform to, our environmental and social guiding principles.

All ClearIntent products must meet one or more of the following criteria:
Responsibly source -- select facestocks made with paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or film made from renewable sources
Reduce -- use less material to help conserve limited natural resources while lowering costs
Recycle - require a label to be more recyclable, to be made of recycled content or to enable or improve the recyclability of the container or packaging the label is on

“Every day, more and more brands are choosing sustainable packaging solutions to meet consumer demand, remain ahead of regulations and demonstrate their corporate values,” said Renae Kezar, senior director - sustainability, Avery Dennison. “The wide range of products in the ClearIntent™ portfolio offer something for everyone’s environmental needs. Working together, we as an industry can make a difference by responsibly sourcing material and significantly reducing the amount of material that goes into the waste stream -- but at the same time delivering quality labeling solutions that do not sacrifice performance or compromise brand integrity.”

Two products to be featured are Avery Dennison’s CleanFlake™ Adhesive Technology -- now available on a white Global MDO film facestock to meet the needs of more home and personal care brands -- and direct thermal pressure sensitive linerless labels:

CleanFlake™ Adhesive Technology significantly reduces waste by cleanly separating pressure-sensitive paper and film labels from the PET substrate during the recycling process, leaving no residual adhesive on the substrate. This process allows a recycler to improve the overall yield of food-grade PET, allowing recycled PET containers to be re-used in container applications – in essence, upcycling the material rather than downcycling it for use in applications such as carpet fibers, fleece clothing or strapping materials, which moves it one step closer to disposal in a landfill.

CleanFlake works in harmony with the existing recycling stream and meets the highest form of testing available from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR). This advanced adhesive technology offers brand owners the ability to offer consumers a powerful sustainability credential while providing high label performance. PET bottles and containers can vary with respect to ease of recyclability. Specific application testing is recommended. Avery Dennison can assist with this evaluation per APR guidelines.

Avery Dennison’s direct thermal self-wound linerless labels eliminate a major source of waste -- leftover liner and matrix, which accounts for more than half of the label waste created during application. Less waste also means lower disposal costs for converters, reducing the related energy used in the process. All of these features provide enhanced environmental credentials for brand owners.

Linerless label technology can also double the number of labels per same-size roll through the elimination of the liner, which enables lower shipping, storage and related energy costs. It also means converters can improve shop floor productivity by reducing the number of roll changes required.
