BillerudKorsnäs has entered into a licensing relationship with HP Inc. to develop a white coated kraftliner for high-speed water based inkjet, optimized for the HP PageWide web presses.

Previously there has been a need for primers in order to get the desired print quality when using high-speed water based inkjet technology on coated liners. The aim of this new strategic collaboration between BillerudKorsnäs and HP is to develop a coated liner based on HP’s ColorPRO Technology, enabling water based high-speed inkjet printing directly on the coated liner without the need for any pretreatment. This will open up opportunities for more cost-efficient packaging solutions.

BillerudKorsnäs is the first ColorPRO Technology partner in Europe for coated liners designed specifically for the packaging market.

With rapid water absorption leaving the ink pigments close to the surface, ColorPRO Technology enables high-speed printing with bolder blacks, brighter colors, sharper lines and an expanded color gamut.

“BillerudKorsnäs was chosen as a partner, not only for being a leading quality producer of coated kraftliner, but also for offering a broad range of solutions within the field of fibre based packaging materials. BillerudKorsnäs also has good global coverage and outstanding R&D facilities,” says John Ferraro, Director and GM Media Supplies and Solutions at HP.

The new coated liner product is expected to be available on the market towards the end of 2017.
