P&G's innovative package/product

Unique is a word that aptly describes the product and packaging for Dryel®, a fabric care system that permits consumers to dry-clean clothes at home.

Introduced last year by Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble, Dryel is a multi-piece cleaning kit contained in an oval convolute paperboard canister with a locking plastic dome overcap.

A piece of tape at the two ends of the package also helps secure the dome onto the canister.

The straightwall canisters are formed at 85 to 90/min on a PMC-1500NR machine from Paper Machinery (Milwaukee, WI). Sidewall blanks are made from 28-pt SBS paperboard sheet from Gulf States Paper (Tuscaloosa, AL).

The light green, transparent overcap is thermoformed from polyethylene terephthalate. It allows consumers to see the packaged kit contents. Inside the canister is a large, reusable garment bag into which consumers place clothes to be cleaned. In with the garments goes a heat-activated cloth that lifts odors for release through vents in the garment bag. Curwood (Oshkosh, WI) is one of the suppliers of the printed, nylon-based garment bag. The same firm also provides the flexible film packs that contain each heat-activated cloth.

Introduced last year, Dryel is meeting its sales objectives, according to a company spokesman. Dryel retails nationwide for about $10.
