Multinational meat giant, Tyson Foods, announced a shut down of a processed food plant in Rome, Ga. The closure will result in layoffs for 168 employees, CBS News Atlanta says. The plant will officially cease operations on May 31.

In a release shared to CBS News Atlanta, a spokesperson for the company called the closure a "difficult decision."

"The facility has operated under a unique single-customer model, but recent changes have made continued operations at the site no longer viable," the spokesperson said to CBS News Atlanta. "We recognize the impact this has on our team members and the Rome community. Supporting our people is our top priority, and we are encouraging impacted team members to apply for other roles within the company while working with state and local partners to provide support during this transition."

This closure follows a series of cutbacks on Tyson facilities. ProFood World previously reported that the company ceased operations at a Nebraska beef facility in Jan. 2026 and cut shifts at a beef facility in Texas.

Both operational shifts resulted in worker layoffs, eliminating 3,212 jobs in Lexington, Neb. and 1,761 jobs in Amarillo, Tex.

In the 2025 fiscal year Tyson reported a $1.135 billion loss in its beef segment. According to AP News, the company expects losses to continue with more than $600 million lost on beef production this year.
