RFID addresses liability, patient care, safety, and tracking in growing cabinets market
Liability and patient care, and inventory visibility, are two key drivers of a growing trend in the Radio-frequency identification-enabled cabinets market that's emerged over the past 18 months. An RFID cabinet is a cabinet, freezer, or refrigerator equipped with an RFID reader to read the RFID-tagged items stored inside. Readers can upload the data via the Internet. During an Oct. 2 Webinar sponsored by Odin Technologies and Terso Solutions entitled "Using RFID Cabinets and Freezers to Protect and Manage High-Value Inventory." The event featured three case studies.

The 'Church' of safe transport packaging
Cold chain is a term that typically describes the distribution channel used to ship drugs in the refrigerated temperature range of 2ºC to 8ºC. But Edward Church (shown), executive director of the International Safe Transit Assn., explains, "I would refer to this environment as the temperature-controlled supply chain, not just the cold chain, because we work with a variety of temperatures, although the 2º to 8º Celsius range is used most prevalently with pharmaceuticals and biological products." In this article, Church identifies factors to consider when shipping temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical and biological products.

Roche goes green, saves greenbacks
A change to more readily recyclable fiberboard for its Boniva (ibrandronate sodium) prescription-only osteoporosis wallet pack is yielding economic and environmental benefits for Nutley, NJ-based Roche, a division of Swiss pharmaceutical giant, the Roche Group (F. Package performance is critical in the OR
Surgical procedures demand the best from medical professionals. In turn, nurses and doctors demand much from medical device packaging. ...When a surgeon is demanding a nurse to, "just open it," the medical device package must be easy to open and properly labeled, with print sizeable enough so that critical details, such as the expiration date, latex content, and product details, are readable-stat! Talk about "point-of-care"-the operating room (OR) represents just that. Mary Jo Steiert (shown) knows all about the OR environment. She's a registered nurse (RN) and Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR).

Surgical nurses survey medical device packaging
Medical device packaging must be simple enough for a child to open. Devices should be easy to remove from their packages. Both inner and outer packaging could be sturdier. Color coding and consistent expiration date formats among different products would be beneficial. End users of devices should be consulted in the development of the device package. Packages should create less waste and/or be recyclable. These "suggestions" were among the most dominant responses from operating room (OR) nurses responding to a recent Institute of Packaging Professionals' Medical Device Packaging Technical Committee /Assn. of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Custom Research Survey.

Schwarz powers powder packaging
Asymmetric containers are more problematic for filling than symmetric ones, but they're little problem for Schwarz Pharma. The Seymour, IN-based pharmaceutical products company has packaged its oral solution powders into 4-L (1-gal) offset-neck high-density polyethylene bottles at rates around 20/min for years. Not bad. Yet that wasn't good enough to meet growing demand and future plans. Last year, Schwarz replaced that line to double speeds to 40 bpm, improving changeovers and cleanliness.
