Schreiner MediPharm, a Germany-based global provider of specialty pharmaceutical labeling systems, has developed a new tamper-evident security concept for luer-lock syringes known as Cap-Lock. This added security features a combination of a cap adapter and label that is designed to seal prefilled syringes for reliable first opening indication. This is meant to ensure the primary container’s integrity by preventing undetected opening of the cap.

Cap-Lock is a plastic cap adapter placed atop a syringe’s primary closure, made to equalize any difference in diameter between the syringe body and closure. Then, a label designed with integrated perforation for tamper evidence is applied that wraps around the syringe body and the bottom part of the cap adapter. When a user opens the syringe cap, the label is partially destroyed—designed to clearly and irreversibly indicate that the cap has been opened.

The Cap-Lock syringe can be opened as usual in any setting sand, due to the larger diameter, the adapter is simple to twist off even with gloves, according to the company.

This security feature can also be applied to syringes in a conventional production setting. The application process requires no heat, which is meant to make Cap-Lock suitable for sensitive substances. The label is designed so that it can be provided with additional functionalities such as counterfeit-proof features, detachable documentation labels, or light protection. According to the company, the system is adaptable to many commonly used syringe sizes, and both the label and adapter can be customized for color and design. Due to the combination of the adapter with the primary closure of the syringe, no additional waste should be generated with both parts connected to each other.
