College art students design children's medical device

Art students at Florida State University are walking away from the canvas and into the science labs.

Students at Florida State University's Department of Art were recently challenged to design a prototype to help better administer medical tests to kids at an Ohio children's hospital.

According to The Tallahassee Democrat, the students and faculty worked with scientists to design a haptic air tester. The tester, according to the article, can "safely and accurately test the neurological response time for children ages 12 to 36 months with cerebral palsy."

“We’re constantly looking for projects that show what art students can offer outside of what is commonly understood as art,” Robert Duarte, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art, told the news outlet. “While this project is in the realm of biomedical engineering, there is something different that artists can offer to the process of making a product or, in this case, designing a medical device.”

Some of the criteria for the medical device included being able to be easily cleaned, sustainable and replicated.
